Helpful tips for carpet care and stain removal

Prevention:
Prevention is better than cure!  Ensure you have a good doormat to prevent as much soil as possible entering your home.  Also, keeping your kitchen floor clean will prevent greasy traffic lanes forming through your dining room or living room.

Regular Vacuuming:
Regular vacuuming will keep your carpets looking their best.  A good tip is to rake your carpet prior to using the vacuum cleaner.  This will loosen the dirt, pet hairs and raise the pile, making the vacuuming far more effective.

Cleaning Up Spills:
Act quickly to stop the stain spreading or penetrating the carpet fibers.  Scrape up solids with a spoon or palette knife, always working towards the center of a spillage to prevent spreading the stain.  Blot up liquids with a clean white terry-cloth towel.

Periodic Cleaning by Chem-Dry Professionals:
Periodic Cleaning by Chem-Dry Professionals will keep your carpets looking as good as the day you bought them.  There are many risks involved if you shampoo your carpets yourself or use unqualified carpet cleaning companies.  For a really professional job that you can be sure of, call Chem-Dry Northeast today for a free, no-obligation quote.

Tips For Stain Removal

See chart below for suggestions on which Chem-Dry product to use on several common stains.

Before using any stain removal product, be sure to check for colorfastness in an inconspicuous area first!  Be particularly careful with 'dry-clean only' upholstered furniture.

Most stains that are allowed to dry overnight will become more difficult to remove. This also applies to hot tea and especially coffee, as they become heat set.  So whenever possible always deal with any stains as soon as they happen.

Stain Removal on Carpets:

  • Using Chem-Dry's exclusive stain remover, this is how you would deal with stains.
  • Blot up any surface liquid, or in the case of other spills, remove as much of the spillage as possible.
  • Holding the Chem-Dry Spot Remover approximately 12" away, direct the spray to cover the whole of the stain.
  • Using the bottom of a dessert spoon (or other dull object), agitate the solution on and around the stained area.
  • With the cleaning cloth apply pressure and blot up the Chem-Dry Spot Remover.  Never rub the stain or you could damage your carpet.
  • It may be necessary to repeat the above process several times on particularly stubborn stains.

Stubborn Stains and Spills

There are some spills and stains that are impossible for the householder to deal with.  The Chem-Dry professional has the know-how, equipment and solutions necessary to remove most stubborn stains.  We therefore recommend that in the event of such an emergency the following procedure will minimize damage.

Things You Should Do

  1. Act immediately before the spills or stain spreads too far or penetrates the fibers.
  2. Scrape up as much as possible with a spoon or palette knife (i.e. a blunt edge).
  3. Always work towards the center of the spillage to avoid spreading.
  4. Blot up liquids with a clean cloth, towel or kitchen paper.
  5. Use plain warm water to dampen and blot the spill without rubbing.
  6. Keep spill or stain moist with a little water and keep a damp cloth spread over the area until help arrives.

Things You Should Not Do

  1. Lift the carpets or roll them up.
  2. Rub the stain. Always blot it up.
  3. Try to dry out by applying heat.
  4. Use solvents, detergents, turpentine or other home-made solutions.
